Motivating Monday: Week 3
Good morning everyone!
I hope everyone has a great week, leading up to Christmas.
Lets start this week off right right with some inspiration.
My pick for this week is a video created by Vimeo user Mars Sanford.
The title of this short piece is "Shapes" This simple title is very fitting for what this video includes.
Mars took simple geometry composed of different basic shapes and did an animation overload with them.
You also can't go wrong with music pulled from the Fight Club soundtrack.
Good job Mars, now everyone get out there and make some awesome stuff!
Till next time...

Sonic Generations Review
Sega offers us a two for one deal, but is it a purchase worth making?
Flash back to 20 years ago when the now beloved blue woodland creature rolled onto the Sega Genesis and into our lives. From that point on Sega would have a mascot to rival Nintendo's Mario. Sonic would not only appear in many more games, but also he was on backpacks, lunchboxes, t-shirts, and Saturday morning television. Sonic has grown up with multiple generations of people, but his games have not been able to keep up the pace. Once Mario and crew made the jump to a 3D world, Sega knew that Sonic was required to do the same. Ever since that moment Sonic has been on a slow decline in quality with lackluster gameplay and presentation. The only avenue left to experience a high quality Sonic game was on portable systems or by revisiting games of the past. With the arrival of games like Sonic Unleashed, Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and Sonic Colors; Sonic Team has been taking steps in the right direction to perfect the Sonic formula for the current era. Sonic Generation takes all the good constructed in the past few years, while leaving out most of the baggage to deliver the Sonic game many fans have been waiting for since the Geneses era.
Sorry Big..no fishing levels this time. |
So what brings these two Sonics from two different time frames together in the first place? During an attempt at a surprise birthday party for Sonic, a giant purple creature breaks through the sky sucking up Sonic's friends and setting everything into a limbo. In the limbo the two Sonics clash and team up to restore their worlds back to normal. The story is about as basic as you can get. Do not to expect anything ground breaking when it comes to story telling in the Sonic franchise. If anything the story in Generations is a step in the wrong direction. Luckily cutscenes are few and far between and are at least animated well with the inclusion of the mediocre voice acting Sonic games normally carry. I am also happy to note that Classic Sonic is not ruined with voice acting and remains mute for the full game, only speaking with his actions. If you are not a fan of the English translations, an option to change to multiple other languages is included. Listening to Omocha in Japaneses is quite the treat.
Sonic Generation's sights and sounds do not disappoint. Viewing re-imagined worlds from a classic and modern perspective is great. All the levels are vibrant and colorful with a sense of scale. Of course when compared to other games of the this console cycle Generations is not up to par, but when you put it up next to similar games of it's category its a sight to behold. Frame rate is crucial for a game based on speed, and this game stays smooth throughout, with only a few slight slowdowns from time to time. Overall the graphics do not disappoint, but what about the sound? Sonic music junkies are defiantly in for a treat. Featuring many original and remixed tracks from Sonic's past. Trust me...there is something to love for everyone. Each track can be played on any stage. Therefore if you cherish the Classic Sonic music of ole or are in favor of the love it or hate it guitar rifts of new, you have a choice on any stage. Also all of those iconic spring and and ring sound effects all return to add to the nostalgic value.
Presentation is great, but what a Sonic game really boils down to is the controls. Luckily you need not to worry for both Sonics control great. Classic Sonic lacks the move arsenal of Modern Sonic to give him the feel of the 2D Sonic from the early 90's. All while Modern Sonic boosts through 3D stages at blistering speeds similar to his latest outings. With both versions of Sonic controlling so fluidly it gives older and younger generation of Sonic fans something to agree about. The controls are still not perfect, with a few slip ups here and there, but they deliver enough satisfaction to not distract from the experience.
Don't expect much of a fight from this dude. |
The core experience of Sonic Generations is short. Getting from Green Hill Zone to the final boss battle can be accomplished in roughly 4 to 5 hours. If your only goal is to experience Generations from start to finish you may be disappointed. If you are willing to dig deeper into Generations though, you will find plenty of content to keep you craving more. Missions are included with each stage in Generations for both Sonics. These missions range from anything to racing a doppelganger, to getting help from one of Sonic's friends. Some of these missions can be a lot of fun and add new challenges to the core game, while some are very dull and a bit of a hassle to complete. Thankfully most missions can be completed by choice and not forced upon the player. Boss battles with rivals from the past also made the cut. Sadly these fights lack in the quality found in the stages. The boss battles quantity also feels too low. There has been many phenomenal battles in Sonic's past and it is a shame to not see them revisited. The player is also able to upgrade their hedgehogs with new skills and abilities, such as faster recovery or classic shields from the past. Lastly an option to play the original game that started it all is included, once you purchase a classic Genesis controller from the shop.
More of this would have been nice. |
Sonic Generations is a love letter to fans. A letter that may not encourage new players to jump on board the Sonic bandwagon, but one that will make any Sonic fan from the past 20 years grin. Generations falls short in some aspects, but makes up for its short comings by providing gamers with what it promises. I cannot think of a better way to celebrate the blue blur's birthday than giving Generations a run through. This game is a drastic step in the right direction for Sonic. Lets just hope he does not fall off his pedestal again.
8/10

Motivating Monday: Week 2
For this week's Motivating Monday, I took a look through some of my all time favorite photos I have stumbled on to while viewing Flickr.com
The photograph I chose for today is labeled "Old Forgotten Piano"
This photo was uploaded a few years back by the user DPINKSTON.
I Just LOVE everything about this photo.
The elements that really stick out to me is the lighting and the texture of the old piano.
The rusty textures that are illuminated from what appears to be an off in the distance light source really develops the atmosphere of the shot.
And don't stop at this photo...the user has some other great photos worth checking out.
Now that you have some motivation in you....get out there and snap some awesome photos!

Totally Tuesday: Week 1
Hey everybody!
I hope you are having a great start to the week.
To keep up with making each day a general theme, I have dedicated my Tuesday and Thursday blog posts to be interlinked with each other.
For both days I will provided a two part post on a specific topic.
What kind of topics can you expect to see here?
Normally I will be posting comentary of my own on some kind of happening in my life.
Most comonly I will provide behind the scenes data of projects I have worked on and give out some details on what helps get my creative gears turning.
This week I am looking back on a project that took a lot of work, a lot help, and a lot of passion. The project I am speaking up if is the music video I worked on in conjunction with Josh Johns.
Check out Matt’s music here: http://www.mattmccoymusic.com/
At the begening of 2011 Matt Mccoy came to Josh wanting to create a music video for his single “Be the Difference.” Josh aggreed and then convinced me to jump on board the project, of course not knowing it would become what it is now.
After the agreement to create this video, we set out to prepare for this massive project. Plenty of story-boarding, script writing, and location scouting happen. Most of which took place at the local Culver’s restaurant. We knew for sure that we wanted to incorporate both a narrative and shots of the band performing.
Drop back by Thursday as I continue this tale…

Motivating Monday: Week 1
Hey everybody!
I know for a lot of us Mondays can be brutal. Getting back into the swing of things can be a chore, especially after an awesome weekend. Therefore I am dedicating my Monday blog post to things that inspire me, and what I believe will inspire you too.
I will try to vary my post every week with not just sweet videos and design work, but also articles that motivates you with a want to do awesome things.
Of course life happens, and sometimes I just cannot post. If I know that is going to happen ahead of time I will try to give a heads up. That way you are not stopping by my blog and disappointed by the lack of motivation on my site.
So lets get cracking on this thing!
For this week I dove into my list of Vimeo favorites from the past to dig out some great videos.
Unlovable
This is a very nice piece created by user Thr-ve. Overall it is very simple in design, but gets the meaning it is trying to convey across very well with smooth animation and transitions. I have seen a lot of motion graphics pieces for churches that feel very "rushed" This is not one of them.
Fruit Snacks
This 15 second spot for fruit snacks is a pleasure to watch. It was created by the company Buck, and features some great animation and silly audio.

Level Up!
Hey, what's going on everybody!?
So you may notice it has been quiet a lengthy time since my blog post.
I decided to pause for a moment and think about what exactly I want this blog to showcase.
So keep those eyes peeled, because an update is coming very soon!

Coffee Shops Brew Up My Creativity
Hello!
Due to lack of much free time, I have been unable to supply a new post on my blog.
Freelance projects along with a tune up of my previously hacked website have been occupying a good chunk of my time lately.
Portfolio Page Update!
For this post I have just one recommendation to any readers that work from home. If working on a laptop is an option I strongly recommend doing some work at a very chill coffee shop, or venue very similar.
As I am typing this I am chillin' at this nice coffee shop located downtown named RedEye.
I know for myself, when I get discouraged or distracted taking my work to a new location will help me stay focused and crank out a few hours of work.
So even if you dislike coffee, like myself, I strongly suggested taking a work day outside of your norm.
Just don't bring your desktop with you. =P
Till next time!

Get Your Portals Out of my Game!!!
Hey hey hey!
So It has been around two weeks since my previous post, so I was thinking it was about time for an update.
Many things have been going on in my life.
Instead of filling up my post with a bunch of jibber jabber about my life, I decided it may be more interesting to post a few awesome finds of mine these past two week.
Lets get started....
What would happen if Valve created a Mario game?
Mari0
I found this link on Kotaku.
After countless spoofs of Portal guns being introduced into other game franchises. A group of creators are finally making a mash up of Mario and Portal a reality.
I am pretty excited for this!
In related news, a hack for the game Minecraft is in the works, that will include a twist of Pocket Monsters.
PokeCraft (Link for the Kotaku article.)
I also have some great links if you are looking for some inspiration.
GreyScaleGorilla does these 5 second projects. Basically He sets a theme for contestants to follow, and the only rule is that it must be 5 seconds long. This time the theme was "Behind the Scenes."
Like always there were some great videos to be seen. Here is just an example of one.
5 Second Project
If you would rather read something for inspiration instead, you should definitely check out this article.

This is all for today.

Hello blog space!
Just laying down an update for the week in the life of Travis.
Last week I was lucky enough to pick up a 3DS with the price drop AND the free 20 downloadable games! =) (Thank you Wal-mart for not following the rules.)
I have to say it is a very nice piece of technology, I just wish there was more of a software selection out there for it.
I also shot my first legit wedding on Saturday night. I am happy to report that it went extremely well. Everything went smoothly and I may have possible job leads from the company I worked with in the future.
Till next time...keep it chill.

Current projects: "Sleepy Head Strikes Back" Sleepy Head Website
I recently finished up a project for a product called Sleepy Head, but it looks like they have some requested changes, so it is back to work on the sheep.
Currently Listening to: Zelda Dubstep!!!
Go check out this awesome combination of Zelda music mixed the dubstep way. Too Good!

I'm the FLINT of this MICHIGAN
Hello blog readers!
I just recently got back from a weekend in Michigan with mi lady.
I got to catch up with a fellow friend from school, as well as check out the riveting Flint area....
It is crazy how that place used to have a huge work force, but is now surrounded by empty factories and boarded up houses.
Also on our trip back we made a pit stop at Michigan dunes. (I personally have never been there before)
Definitely a cool place, sadly our visit was very limited by the weather.
That is all I have to post for today. I hope everyone has an awesome week, and in-till next time...
-Travis
Current Projects: Slowly organizing all my files, and preparing my website for an update. I am also still filling my brain with knowledge about C4D.
Currently reading: Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. I have not dove too far into this book yet, but what I have read I have fully enjoyed. It is very interesting to see how much C.S. Lewis opinions and facts about religion and his way of life can still be relevent in today's world.
Currently gaming: Nothing specific, though I am really tempted to pick up a 3DS if I can manage to get the price drop aaaaannnndd the free 20 games offered to "early" adopters.
More info: 3DS price drop and free games!
Currently watching: Starting watching some Invader Zim, I forgot how good the series is!

Welcome to the structures of my cranium!
Hey all!
To help keep me active in the social network, I will be entangling this blog with my website to keep it up to date.
I am currently upgrading my website to the next level, and will be working to connect every social network site I am apart of into this one website.
http://trheberlingproductions.com
Expect to see changes very soon to my website.
As for the content to expect to find on here, I plan on posting project that I am working on, inspirational pieces that get me motivated, movies and music I am currently digging, and just random blurbs on what is going on in my life.
I hope you enjoy and find the urge to keep checking back. =)
