5 Reasons Why You SHOULDN'T be Self-Employed (Self-Employed Saturday #4)

1. You have no self-discipline
This is huge! Anyone that doesn't have self-disciplining skills should stay far away from freelancing. At an office job you may be able to get away with goofing around on social media or playing games and still get paid, but at home you don't work...you don't get paid. Freedom is a wonderful thing, but if you can't keep yourself focused on the work when work needs to be done, then prepare to have unhappy clients. If you can't disciple yourself then you would be best sticking with a job in an office.

2. You are an introvert.
If you want to freelance you have to talk to clients. For someone in the field of say web design, a lot of your clients may come from the internet. This means a majority of your conversations will be through email. With that said there is still a high chance you will have local clients who want to meet in person, and if you don't know how to handle yourself around people IRL you will be in for a rude awakening. You shouldn't look at freelancing as a way to get away from human interaction, in fact it is the complete opposite.

3. You are a workaholic
This may seem like a positive reason to be self-employed. Being a workaholic means more work, which means more hours, which means more money. This sounds great on the outside, but you forget the side effects that come with working nonstop. If you don't limit your work time you are limiting your time with family, friends, and  recuperating from hard work which will lead to burnout. Being a freelancer means being able to "shut down" the company when the work day is over, and not extending into overtime every night.  If you are freelancing and you find that you have to over work every night, then it might mean it is time for you to start outsourcing your work to other freelancers.

4. You dislike social media
Like it or not, if you want to succeed as a freelance artist you are going to need to be active on social media.  If you don't like being followed on Twitter, updating your status on Facebook, or posting portfolio work on a blog, then you will have a hard time with being self-employed. Social media may not be required to grow your business, but it sure will help loads if you use it correctly. A lot of the work I get is through someone seeing my work on Facebook, or because I was following someone on Twitter.  You need to be a fan of social media to fully strive in freelancing.
5. You want paid vacations and benefits.
This can be the biggest deal breaker for many. As nice as it is to have freedom to take a vacation whenever you want, that vacation will not be covered by an employer. You must really work to earn that time off, because unless you have employees working for you, the time you take off is time you are losing income. Don't forget about health and insurance benefits. Most full time jobs will offer some type of package for benefits. Since you won't be receiving anything like this, you need to make sure you are making enough so if an accidents does happen, you have the income to take care of it. This isn't a huge lost...you may be able to find an insurance plan that is better than anything a company would give you, or you could be married and sharing a plan that your significant other has. If you are a single freelancer that doesn't have a large income flow, then I would say tread lightly when it comes to being self - employed.

Motivating Monday Week 39

Today is a plug day for myself.

I am pasting together a brand new demo reel for 2013, and I have a rough edit for everyone to check out.

I would love to get some feedback on what I have so far. I still need to add an intro/outro and fine tune a few things.

Other than that I am nearing completion on it.

Regards,

Motivating Monday: Week 2

For this week's Motivating Monday, I took a look through some of my all time favorite photos I have stumbled on to while viewing Flickr.com

The photograph I chose for today is labeled "Old Forgotten Piano"
This photo was uploaded a few years back by the user  DPINKSTON.
I Just LOVE everything about this photo.
The elements that really stick out to me is the lighting and the texture of the old piano.
The rusty textures that are illuminated from what appears to be an off in the distance light source really develops the atmosphere of the shot.

And don't stop at this photo...the user has some other great photos worth checking out.

Now that you have some motivation in you....get out there and snap some awesome photos!

Motivating Monday: Week 1

Hey everybody!

I know for a lot of us Mondays can be brutal. Getting back into the swing of things can be a chore, especially after an awesome weekend. Therefore I am dedicating my Monday blog post to things that inspire me, and what I believe will inspire you too.
I will try to vary my post every week with not just sweet videos and design work, but also articles that motivates you with a want to do awesome things.
Of course life happens, and sometimes I just cannot post. If I know that is going to happen ahead of time I will try to give a heads up. That way you are not stopping by my blog and disappointed by the lack of motivation on my site.

So lets get cracking on this thing!

For this week I dove into my list of Vimeo favorites from the past to dig out some great videos.

 Unlovable

This is a very nice piece created by user Thr-ve. Overall it is very simple in design, but gets the meaning it is trying to convey across very well with smooth animation and transitions. I have seen a lot of motion graphics pieces for churches that feel very "rushed" This is not one of them.

Fruit Snacks

This 15 second spot for fruit snacks is a pleasure to watch. It was created by the company Buck, and features some great animation and silly audio.

Coffee Shops Brew Up My Creativity

Hello!

Due to lack of much free time, I have been unable to supply a new post on my blog.

Freelance projects along with a tune up of my previously hacked website have been occupying a good chunk of my time lately.

Portfolio Page Update!

For this post I have just one recommendation to any readers that work from home. If working on a laptop is an option I strongly recommend doing some work at a very chill coffee shop, or venue very similar.
As I am typing this I am chillin' at this nice coffee shop located downtown named RedEye.
I know for myself, when I get discouraged or distracted taking my work to a new location will help me stay focused and crank out a few hours of work.

So even if you dislike coffee, like myself, I strongly suggested taking a work day outside of your norm.

Just don't bring your desktop with you. =P

Till next time!

Hello blog space!

Just laying down an update for the week in the life of Travis.

Last week I was lucky enough to pick up a 3DS with the price drop AND the free 20 downloadable games! =) (Thank you Wal-mart for not following the rules.)

I have to say it is a very nice piece of technology, I just wish there was more of a software selection out there for it.

I also shot my first legit wedding on Saturday night. I am happy to report that it went extremely well. Everything went smoothly and I may have possible job leads from the company I worked with in the future.

Till next time...keep it chill.

I'm the FLINT of this MICHIGAN

Hello blog readers!

I just recently got back from a weekend in Michigan with mi lady.

I got to catch up with a fellow friend from school, as well as check out the riveting Flint area....

It is crazy how that place used to have a huge work force, but is now surrounded by empty factories and boarded up houses.

Also on our trip back we made a pit stop at Michigan dunes. (I personally have never been there before)

Definitely a cool place, sadly our visit was very limited by the weather.

That is all I have to post for today. I hope everyone has an awesome week, and in-till next time...

-Travis

Current Projects: Slowly organizing all my files, and preparing my website for an update. I am also still filling my brain with knowledge about C4D.

Currently reading:  Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. I have not dove too far into this book yet, but what I have read I have fully enjoyed. It is very interesting to see how much C.S. Lewis opinions and facts about religion and his way of life can still be relevent in today's world.

Currently gaming: Nothing specific, though I am really tempted to pick up a 3DS if I can manage to get the price drop aaaaannnndd the free 20 games offered to "early" adopters.
More info: 3DS price drop and free games!

Currently watching: Starting watching some Invader Zim, I forgot how good the series is!
