5 Reasons Why You Should be Self-Employed (Self-Employed Saturday #3)

imageimage
Being self employed is defiantly not for everyone. When it comes to being in the creative field, working for a company means you are given more structured tasks. More than likely if the company hired you as an animator, then you will be animating, and not in charge of ordering catering for the client, or taking care of the company's taxes.  When it comes to being self employed be prepared to have full control. The job doesn't  end with just filming an event. First you must find the client, discuss pricing with the client, do the job, discuss revisions, and finally bill the client at the end. A self-employed artist sees the whole picture as opposed to just a small portion of it.
If being in charge of the full process sounds fun to you then self employment may just be the right now career choice for you. Here our 5 reasons why you self employment may be the answer for you.

1. You are free.
You are the schedule maker . Want to take a vacation for a week? Then do it! Do you need extra money to fund that vacation? Then take on extra projects! This sense of complete freedom may be a little daunting to some, but if it sounds like something you can manage wisely then you could be on the verge of a dream job. Typically a person's life has to revolve around a job. Where they live, when they wake up, what they do for work, etc...is all decided with that 1 job. With self-employment your job will revolve around your life. The choice you make, wither good or bad, will affect the job you have. Chose when you wake up, when you go to bed, where you live, who you work for, and more.

2. You get full value.
Typically working for the man means that the man is getting the full credit for what you did. Being self-employed means you follow the project through from start to finish. This means you can take full credit on the hard work you put into the project.  Being employed means that you only get a small portion of the full value of the project. Working for yourself though opens up the full reward to you and your team.

3. You open up new career options.
To some people starting out freelance may be their only option if they want to get paid for doing something they enjoy. A lot of larger companies want their new employees to have 3 or more years of experience. Well how do you gain that three years if no one will take you? One option is to apply to work for smaller companies with lower pay and will have you doing jobs that don't push your creativity. The second option is to begin marketing yourself to anyone and everyone you know. Pick up some smaller jobs and build up. This not only will build your experience credibility, but also may lead you on a path to clients offering the projects you dream to do.

4.  You will learn more.
This might scare away some people, but if you are the type of person who always wants to learn new things, and be on top of the game then this should be extreme motivation for you to become a freelancer. Using a videographer as an example. Not only does freelancing require you to keep your shooting and editing skills top notch. You must also stay up on the current trends in your market to advertise your skills, stay up to date on current cameras and gear, bill clients, pay for assistant videographers, and keep records for taxes. Essentially, once you start freelancing you become a business. If you can't run your skills and services like a successful business, prepare to fail.

5.  You can keep your day job.
Being self-employed doesn't always mean that you must give up your 9-5 job. I know many freelancers who work a part time retail job on week days, and do photography at night and on weekends. This can be a win-win combination for some. Not only do you get the stability and benefits of your day job, but you also get to make some extra money doing something you love. Keep in mind that this option is not for everyone. Some businesses frown upon their employees freelancing on the side. You should check with the boss before pursuing extra work.

Being Self Employed is not for everyone. Join us next month with 5 reasons to why you SHOULDN'T be self-employed.

Self-Employed Saturday #2 (Finding Work Part 2)

                                                              Finding Work With Social Media
Did you try out any of the avenues I mentioned last month? Elance, Linkedin, thecreato.rs, and Simply Hired offer many opportunities for finding work, but why stop there?
Plenty of work is right in front of you in the form of social network contacts. This month I want to break down the different ways you can and SHOULD get engaged on the major social media platforms.

Conquering Facebook:
Do you have a Facebook? Chance are you do since 175 million people log into Facebook every day. Just having a Facebook is not enough, in order to use it effectively you must pour into it frequently. Posting photos from your trip to Canada is great, but posting content related to your field of work is even better. Show others in your contact list that you can talk the talk and walk the walk when it comes to your work. By doing this it increases the confidence others have in your skill set and they may coming looking to you to create them a poster or film for their company.
You should also not be afraid to advertise yourself to the public. You just have to know how to do it correctly. When you post a status update saying you are looking for work don’t sound desperate. You should sound confident in yourself wither you have 8 projects going on or just 1. Backing up your words with some type of visual is also important when posting on Facebook. Are you wanting to find more weddings to film for the summer time? Follow up your words with a demo reel of your best wedding work, or an example of a wedding you did last summer.
You should also be aware of your audiences’ limit for your Facebook post. You don’t want to overload people to the point that they ignore your post all together  because you sound like a broken record.
Finding work on Facebook doesn’t stop at status updates. Every freelancer; big or small should have their own Facebook page. Wither this goes under a company or personal name is all up to you, all that matters is that you have a page for clients to add that isn’t just your personal page.

Here is an example of my page:

Lastly…are you aware of the classified pages on Facebook? A lot of users have gone out of their way to create groups similar to Craigslist where people can sale items as well as their skills. Just go to Facebook and do a search for your county, city, state, etc… and chances are you will find a classified page for you to advertise yourself on.

Maximizing Twitter:
I will be honest…when I first signed up for Twitter I didn’t get it. 140 character limit, no groups, no photo albums, etc… This all changed when I started to discover what other professionals were using their Twitters for.  The first thing you should do after signing up for Twitter is start following job feeds in your industry. This is a fast and effective way to get real time updates on any job openings no matter where you are. Also following other professionals and companies related to your field, and retweeting their post will show that you have a similar interests which means other followers of said person or company may start following you as well.

Linking it all together:
The last recommendation I have is to take all of your social networks and connect them into one. How do you do this? Each platform has a way to connect other platforms in their settings. If you go into your settings on Twitter you will find an option that allows you to connect your Facebook account. So now every time you update your Twitter with new content, that same content will show up on your Facebook. Connecting Facebook to Twitter is only the tip of the ice berg. Every videographer should have a Youtube and/or a Vimeo account. You can then take this account and link it to your other social networks. That way when you post a new video, an update will go out to your Twitter, Facebook, etc.… This makes life much easier, and eliminates any need to copy and paste your videos.

When used correctly social media is a beast in online marketing for your work. With it being so readily available and free, there is no reason not to plug yourself in. Get out there and use it!

What is planned for 2013?

Hey all!

The year of 2012 was a great year to be alive on Earth, and I am sure 2013 will be just as significant.

A lot of great changes and a lot of great work was done in 2012, and I am excited to keep pumping out some wonderful work through 2013.

We also survive an apocalyptic ending to the world a few weeks ago...life is good.
Some small changes will be taking place on my blog.

First off I plan to do a look back at 2012 on the blog side. I plan to take a look back at some of my favorite post from the previous year and discuss why they still stick out to me.

As far as recurring content, I plan to add a monthly post titled Self Employed Saturdays. On this post you can expect to find some insight on being a freelancer. This post could include anything from experiences of my self, interview from other freelancers, or projects created by some of the best freelancers out there.

Final logo coming soon.

On top of the new content you can still expect to get some motivating info on Mondays and something on the wacky side for Wednesdays

Here is to a brand new year! I am excited to see what it brings!
